CoachingPlus International: Leadership Development fueled by Collaborative Intelligence (CI)

Leadership, as a whole, is a complex art made up of complex individuals with complex characteristics. These characteristics contribute to a leader’s ability to successfully inspire and motivate their business teams and peers. Quite often, this is dictated by their unique balance of Emotional Intelligence (EQ), Business Cultural Intelligence (BCQ) and Verbal Intelligence (VQ). Individually and collectively, these accentuate a leader’s resilience in a constantly evolving and highly competitive business world. Leaders with the capacity to create a highly collaborative workplace realize how these vital characteristics become the gateway to effective and inclusive business environments.

Realizing the importance of balancing these key leadership traits, CoachingPlus International, an Asia-based firm that works with clients globally, has developed a Collaborative Intelligence (CI) model for leadership development, which allows leaders to develop and balance their various traits to build a stronger and more resilient profile. The company’s leadership development programs enhance the quality of leadership, while increasing organizational effectiveness. Utilizing the EQ-i 2.0 Model – developed by Multi- Health Systems Inc. (MHS) – as the foundation of Collaborative Intelligence (CI), CoachingPlus empowers decision-makers to be their best, while enabling the same for their peers and teams. Their targeted, activity-rich programs allow participants to identify and balance key competencies, strengths and potential blind spots, thereby developing Collaborative Intelligent leaders and business teams.

The Core of Collaborative Intelligence (CI)

CoachingPlus’ proficiency in developing Collaborative Intelligence through its leadership programs hinges on the enhancement and balancing of three fundamental traits– Emotional Intelligence (EQ), Business Cultural Intelligence (BCQ) and Verbal Intelligence (VQ). These traits are key drivers in developing a highly effective and collaborative workplace. “Being a Collaborative Intelligent Leader means having the necessary self-awareness to recognize an internal or external challenge to their leadership effectiveness, and then take the necessary actions to calibrate and bring about the right balance within their Emotional, Business Cultural and Verbal capacities,” says Demetris Booth, Founder and Master Coach/Trainer. “In developing more collaborative and resilient individuals, our programs support their journey to become more inspirational, aspirational and effective as leaders. The dynamic activities used in our coaching and training programs, systematically develops and integrates new skills, allowing leaders to adapt them to a variety of leadership scenarios,” adds Demetris.

Putting theory into practice provides several successful examples of the CoachingPlus approach in action. A public relation firm in Hong Kong was looking to improve communication and collaboration among their teams.

Our leadership program helps clients enhance the quality of leaders and teams throughout the organization. A vital part of our leadership development programs is the various forms of feedback we receive from the participants; they begin reflecting from the first exercise, then steadily progresses until new behaviors are learned and integrated


Upon administering an assessment with the organization, coaches at CoachingPlus realized that challenges existed not just among the teams, but also highlighted certain actions that leadership could take as well. “With our assessments, leaders at the firm learned that while their teams required training on collaboration and communication, the leadership panel would also benefit from executive coaching and guidance in fostering a truly collaborative business environment,” elaborates Demetris. CoachingPlus conducted a two-day workshop with the business team to develop their collaboration skills. Additionally, the leadership received 3-month of executive coaching. In the end, the results spoke for themselves. Not only were workshop participants able to identify the strengths and weaknesses that influences their collaboration and leadership skills, but in developing strategies to balance these, it helped transform their normally pugilistic environment into a more open, collaborative and feedback-oriented workplace. With follow-up coaching sessions tailored to the individuals, CoachingPlus provided ongoing integration of new skills and behaviors learned in the workshop.



Another example demonstrates how CoachingPlus conducted an EQ leadership development workshop, whereby, they walked their client through a series of emotional exercises to encourage self-exploration. The workshop was an emotional and cultural awakening that involved a series of discussions and exercises, producing numerous thought-provoking activities. “A vital part of our leadership development programs is the various forms of feedback we receive from the participants; they begin reflecting from the first exercise, then steadily progresses until new behaviors are learned and integrated,” states Demetris. In the second half of this workshop, CoachingPlus guided the client into connecting Transformational Leadership to Collaborative Intelligent Leadership, culminating in a goal-setting exercise that enabled participants to identify key behaviors they wanted to improve, then develop an action plan to achieve their desired outcomes. Such activities build resilient leadership characteristics that drive businesses forward through a collaborative thought process.

Torchbearers of Business Transformation

Since its inception, CoachingPlus as focused on developing more effective leaders and teams. Demetris often reflects on how his own desire and commitment to become a more effective leader drove the development of the Collaborative Intelligence (CI) model, which addresses emotional resilience, business culture calibration and influencing skills. These attributes are key to effective leadership in collaborative environments. He adds, “When I founded the company, I understood that leadership is imperfect, constantly evolving, and even good leaders suffer periods of questionable effectiveness. And this is where they benefit from models such as Collaborative Intelligence, which develops and balances these key attributes.”
